Tarbela DAM

First and leading in Famous Dams of Pakistan is the Tarbela Dam. It is not the only largest dam in Pakistan, but the largest earth-filled dam on the earth. The dam is situated on the Indus River, the second-largest in structural volume after the Three Gorges Dam in Hubei Province, China. Moreover, it was started in 1968 and was completed in 1976 at the cost of $1,497 million. Furthermore, it is 143.26 meters or 470ft in height and 2,743.2 meters or 9,000 ft. in length. Additionally, the total capacity of the dam is 13.69 cubic km, spread over the construction area of 168,000 Km².

Rawal DAM

Rawal Dam, one of the major dams in Pakistan, is located in Islamabad. The dam was built to provide water supply to the twin cities of Pakistan. The construction of the dam started in 1962. The dam has a water capacity of around 42,000 acre-feet.

Apart from being a water storage facility, Rawal Dam is also one of Islamabad’s most famous tourist points. Mangla DAM

Mangla Dam is one of the largest dams of Pakistan. Mangla Dam is a water reservoir and an essential player of the international treaty between Pakistan and India, the Indus Waters Basement Treaty. The dam was constructed on the River Jhelum and got its name from the nearby village called ‘Mangla’.

Its construction was started in 1961 and was completed in 1965 and can be one of the oldest dams of Pakistan. At the time of construction, Mangla Dam was considered to be the fifth-largest dam of the world. Currently, it is the 12th largest dam in the world. With a length of 3140 meters and a height of 147 meters, the Mangla reservoir can store 7.39 million acre-feet (M.A.F.) water.

Narayan DAM

Small Dam is located in Naryab, Tehsil Thal. Hangu District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. It is one of a number of small water reservoirs constructed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to provide water for irrigation and drinking in times of drought. There is no other dam within 55 km². Hub DAM

Situated on the border between Sindh and Balochistan, the Hub Dam is a reservoir on the Hub River, one of the primary sources of drinking water for Karachi. Built over nearly 20 years, from 1963 to 1981, the dam’s region is a declared wildlife sanctuary where pelicans, ducks, cranes, and other migratory birds can be seen in their natural habitat. The Hub Dam remains a major tourist spot for the people of Karachi, boasting a rest house owned by WAPDA and various opportunities to enjoy swimming, fishing, and overnight camping.
